Health and Family Services Cabinet
Medicaid Managed Care Forums for Providers Scheduled
CHFS, DOI leadership will be on hand for education sessions
FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 2, 2013) – As part of Governor Steve Beshear’s emphasis on enhanced education efforts related to Medicaid managed care, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) and the Kentucky Department of Insurance (DOI) have scheduled forums for health care providers in each of the eight Medicaid regions during May and June. The forums will be attended by senior officials from CHFS, including Cabinet Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes, Medicaid Commissioner Lawrence Kissner, Public Health Commissioner Dr. Stephanie Mayfield Gibson and Dr. Allen Brenzel of the Department for Behavioral Health, and Brian Staples, DOI ombudsman.
“It is of vital importance that we continue to open the lines of communication with the provider community, and that is why I have directed the Cabinet to increase education about our Medicaid managed care efforts,” said Gov. Beshear. “Managed care is an approach that we believe will ultimately move the health needle in the right direction for Kentucky, and we must ensure everyone is working together toward that goal.”
The forums are designed to allow medical providers to meet face-to-face with representatives of the managed care organizations (MCOs) and DOI to discuss concerns about proper billing, the appeals processes and any specific regional issues, in addition to a general conversation about how to improve the overall system of health care delivery in Kentucky.
“We look forward to traveling around the state to engage in these important conversations with our health care providers,” said CHFS Secretary Haynes. “Managed care is the right approach for Kentucky, but we know that we can continue to improve the system to make it work better for everyone involved from providers to Medicaid recipients.”
The sessions will follow the same agenda, beginning with a 9-11:30 a.m. provider information general session with Cabinet officials and concluding with a 1-3:30 p.m. session on provider billing with the MCOs in each region. The dates and locations of the forums are as follows:
• Region 7, May 7: Button Auditorium, Morehead State University (220 Battson-Oates Drive, Morehead)
• Region 8, May 8: Conference Center, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park (75 Theatre Court, Prestonsburg)
Additional forums are being scheduled in Columbia, Dawson Springs, Highland Heights, Lexington, Louisville and Murray. More information on those locations will be announced soon.
The Cabinet for Health and Family Services is home to most of the state's human services and health care programs, including Medicaid, the Department for Community Based Services and the Department for Public Health. CHFS is one of the largest agencies in state government, with nearly 8,000 full and part-time employees throughout the Commonwealth focused on improving the lives and health of Kentuckians.
