RECREATION IS FOR EVERYONE!
In 2009, the Commonwealth Council on Developmental Disabilities began the Recreation Involvement Fund. This fund was established for individuals with developmental disabilities to attend community gyms, such as the YMCA, and enroll in sporting activities like swimming or baseball.
Along with the obvious health benefits, it is the Council’s hope that people using the fund also begin to integrate themselves into the community by forming new bonds with people that they would not otherwise have met. It is also the Council’s hope that non-disabled individuals who may not ordinarily be exposed to people with developmental disabilities to discover that “these people” are not unlike themselves.

Restraint and Seclusion
Kentucky does not have any law regulating the use of restraint and seclusion in public schools. Kentucky teachers can restrain children for any (or no) reason using restraint techniques that have been proven to be dangerous and even deadly. Kentucky teachers can also seclude children by locking them in a closet or small room with no lighting or ventilation, without access to food or a bathroom, for hours or even all day.
Kentucky Protection and Advocacy and the Commonwealth Council on Developmental Disabilities release “Restraint & Seclusion – The Reality in Kentucky Schools.” This booklet details stories of Kentucky children and youth who have been hurt by restraint or seclusion; alternatives to the use of restraint and seclusion; and information about rules for restraint and seclusion currently proposed by the Kentucky Department of Education.
