Make A Difference Day 2009

Make A Difference Day 2009 was Saturday, Oct. 24. The KCCVS once again hosted the food drive competitions between the DCBS Service Regions and the Kentucky AmeriCorps programs.

This year there was also a new competition between the state government cabinets. Governor Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear encouraged all state employees to participate.

Due to the varying sizes of the programs, regions and cabinets, the winners are determined by the highest number of ounces of food collected per employee or member.

Food Drive Competition Results

The overall drive statewide yielded more than 123 tons of food - enough to feed 493,087 Kentuckians* an 8-ounce serving. This is a 74 percent increase from last year. If all 493,087 Kentuckians stood in line for their serving of food, the line would be more than 186 miles long.

The cabinets collected almost 13 tons of food and the DCBS regions collected more than 4 tons of food. The Kentucky AmeriCorps programs collected a staggering 106 tons of food. See the competition breakdowns below.

General Information

The KCCVS traditionally sponsors a campaign to collect as much non-perishable food as possible as part of its Make A Difference Day observance. Collected food is donated to food pantries and emergency feeding centers in the communities where the food is collected.

KCCVS sponsored one food drive involving our Kentucky AmeriCorps programs, another among Cabinet for Health and Family Services's community-based service regions and one among state government cabinets.

Not only does the winning program, region and cabinet earn bragging rights for a year, but they receive a special Make A Difference Day Traveling Award, which remains with the winner for one year and travels to reside with each consecutive winner. If a program, region or cabinet wins the award three successive years, it is theirs to keep. The award is presented in the spring at the annual Governor’s Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
