Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiatives

Community Work-Groups and Coalitions

Local health departments in approximately 90 counties have convened workgroups of people representing social services, schools, youth service centers, clergy, elected offices, the medical community, parents and teens to discuss strategies to reduce teen pregnancy in their communities.

Direct Community Grants for Abstinence Education

To encourage new approaches to reducing sexual activity and pregnancy in teens, Kentucky allocated $977,609 for direct community grants in the 2004-05 fiscal year. Communities may apply for funding (up to $50,000) through the local health department or health districts for projects that meet the abstinence education legislation priorities as stated in the federal 1996 Welfare Law. The goal of these direct grants is to create strong partnerships among public and private community agencies, parents, schools and the faith community to teach school-age children the value of sexual abstinence. Funds also support programs unique to each community, resources and specific needs.

Postponing Sexual Involvement (PSI)

Postponing Sexual Involvement (PSI) is a school-based curriculum designed for junior high/middle school students. This five-session program is taught by peer educators and trained high school students. PSI is abstinence-based and does not include any information about contraceptives. Last year approximately 35,000 students in 240 schools participated in the PSI program.

Reducing the Risk (RTR)

This school-based program offers 16 one-hour sessions focusing on avoiding unprotected intercourse either through abstinence as the only 100 percent safe method, or with proper contraception use. The program includes several sessions with role-playing and other interactive features. Last year the Department for Public Health, through local health departments, provided the program to approximately 19,000 students in 100 schools.
