2009 Medical Reserve Corps Workshop

One key public health response challenge in Kentucky is delivering critical public medical interventions quickly during an emergency. A successful program will save lives and reduce suffering, illness and injury associated with a public health emergency or catastrophic event. A point of dispensing (POD) clinic is an important community tool used to meet this challenge. A POD is a temporary facility designed to quickly provide the public medication from the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) such as antibiotics, antivirals, antitoxins and vaccines, usually within 48 hours.

Successfully implementing a POD requires careful planning and coordination of resources. Volunteers are the most important resource required to successfully operate a POD. In Kentucky, volunteers are provided by the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). Local MRC units in the state are largely managed and educated by local public health departments.

This summer workshop is designed to provide basic MRC and POD training and allow volunteers to practice operating in a POD environment. In addition to universal instruction, participants will also receive discipline-specific information and practice. Disciplines included in this course are nursing and doctoring, pharmacology, social work and administration. This course is appropriate for both new volunteers and current MRC members. By actively developing the knowledge and skills necessary to work together in a POD, public health agencies across the Commonwealth will be better prepared to save lives and protect our communities during times of emergencies and disasters.
