As a First Steps provider, you are required to submit a copy of your Administrative Office of the Courts criminal record and the child abuse/neglect check. You also are required to apply for a national provider identifier and an employer identification number.

Criminal Records Check

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) offers criminal record reports to individuals, businesses, licensing agencies, government entities and others for a nominal fee of $20.

The information comes from CourtNet, the AOC statewide database of court information from local case management system in all 120 Kentucky counties. National Provider Identifier Standard

The national provider identifier (NPI) is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) administrative simplification standard. The NPI is a unique identification number for covered health care providers. Covered health care providers and all health plans and health care clearinghouses must use the NPIs in the administrative and financial transactions adopted under HIPAA. The NPI is a 10-digit number that does not carry other information about healthcare providers, such as the state in which they live or their medical specialty. The NPI must be used in lieu of legacy provider identifiers in the HIPAA standards transactions.

NPI Registration Instructions

Employer Identification Number

Employer identification numbers (EIN) are issued for tax administration and not intended for participation in any other activities (e.g., tax lien auction or sales, lotteries, etc.)

How to become a qualified Spanish Interpreter in Kentucky

To ensure accurate, quality interpretation services, all interpreters used by CHFS must be qualified according to Cabinet standards. To be an interpreter for CHFS, individuals must take the Spanish Language Proficiency Assessment administered by the Language Access Section and achieve at least an intermediate high rating high in all areas of the assessment (grammar/reading, listening comprehension and oral Spanish/English) according to the standards established by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The assessment also includes a practical portion that is recorded. This portion also must be passed and is administered by the Language Access Section to evaluated interpretation skills. Applicants then must complete the Cabinet's one-day interpreter training at a future date.

There is no fee to participate in the assessment or training. If you are interested in participating in one of these assessments, please read the attached qualification procedures documents and complete the registration form and return it to Alexandria Ramos as soon as possible. The sessions are limited to 18 participants each with CHFS staff receiving priority. Other registrations will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. More detailed information, including directions to the testing site will be sent to those who register closer to the date.
