Who Must Be Certified
All diagnostic X-ray machine operators working in medicine, chiropractic, podiatry and bone densitometry. New regulations that were approved in October 2007 require the certification of nuclear medicine technologists, radiation therapists and radiologist assistants.
Methods to Obtain Certification
General Certification - Those individuals that have graduated from an accredited program in radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy or radiologist assistant and hold a valid certificate from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
General Certificate - Issued to those who have completed the above programs and holds a valid certificate from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
Temporary Certificate - Issued to those who have completed the above course and are awaiting examination with the ARRT or the NMTCB. This certificate is valid for one (1) year only and is not renewable.
Limited Certification - Those individuals holding a Limited Certificate cannot be employed as a radiation operator at a facility which utilizes contrast media (i.e. gall bladder, GI series, IVP, etc.).
- Institutional Program - A limited radiography program approved by the state at a post-secondary institution.
- Independent Study Course - A limited radiography home study course is available from the radiation health branch. This course is designed for an individual who is working in a doctor’s office or medical clinic where limited radiography (non-contrast) procedures are performed. This course cannot exceed one year.

Certification Fees
General and Limited Certificates - $60. This includes a $25 registration fee and a $35 certificate fee. These certificates are valid for two years.
Temporary Certificate - $50. This includes a $25 registration fee and a $25 dollar certificate fee. This certificate is valid for one year only.
