Introduction Note
Beginning in 1999, Kentucky death statistics incorporated two major changes which affected their comparability with statistics from previous years. Following recommendations made by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a new population standard (the projected year 2000 U.S. standard population) and a new International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) were implemented in the United States.
All age-adjusted death rates have been adjusted to the year 2000 standard, which replaces the 1970 U.S. standard population used to age-adjust death rates in the Kentucky Annual Vital Statistics Report since 1985. The reader is cautioned that age-adjusted rates based upon different standard populations cannot be accurately compared.
In addition, causes of death have been classified by ICD-10. This latest revision marks a major departure from previous revisions, most noticeably by adopting alphanumeric codes in place of numeric codes. See Appendix - Cause of Death Codes below for a list of ICD-10 codes used to define causes of death in the tables.
