AmeriCorps meeting needs through 11 state programs - 225 AmeriCorps members engaged in broad array of service projects
FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 22, 2007) – More than $2.7 million in grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) will fund 11 state AmeriCorps programs throughout Kentucky for the 2007-08 program year, beginning in September.
The grants were awarded to the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, which administers the state AmeriCorps program. Kentucky’s CNCS grants to AmeriCorps programs are matched on the local level at a rate of 33-55 percent, with local match rates increasing each year programs receive funding. All but three AmeriCorps state programs funded for the 2007-08 term are continuation programs.
Among the 11 state AmeriCorps programs, 225 AmeriCorps members will be assigned to service projects ranging from tutoring children, counseling the homeless and helping aging Kentuckians remain independent, to building capacity for agencies serving low-income clients and recruiting volunteers to respond in times of disaster.
New and returning AmeriCorps members serving in 2007-08 state programs will be inducted at a ceremony Oct. 5 on the steps of the State Capitol. The ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
AmeriCorps members will be eligible for $1 million in education vouchers after completing their terms of service. Since 1994, Kentucky AmeriCorps members have qualified for more than $14 million in education vouchers for college or technical school tuition or to pay off student loans.
