Local Statewide Pandemic Flu Summits A Success

Local planning essential to address global threat of pandemic flu

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 27, 2006) – The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) has successfully concluded a series of local pandemic flu summits held statewide to address pandemic flu preparedness.

A total of 50 local summits were held statewide with participation from all 120 counties in Kentucky.

“We are very pleased with the positive turnout and interest from all segments of the population, “ said William D. Hacker, M.D., commissioner for public health and acting undersecretary for health at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. “First responders, hospitals, schools, churches, farmers, businesses, members of the media as well as families and individuals attended the summits in order to better prepare for a pandemic.”

The purpose of the in-state summits was to help inform and engage public health and emergency response communities with political, economic and community leadership in the state’s pandemic planning process.

According to the federal Department for Health and Human Services, pandemic flu is virulent flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Currently, there is no pandemic flu.
