Leaders in business, technology, health care, academia and government will gather Dec. 6-7 in Lexington for Kentucky’s second e-Health summit.

Those interested in participating are encouraged to register before the event. Early registration closes Friday, Nov. 16.

“e-Health can do so much to improve health care in Kentucky,” said Governor Ernie Fletcher. “Transitioning to an electronic network has the potential to make health care more efficient and can also reduce medical error.”

The summit, to be held at Lexington’s Marriott Griffin Gate, will be an opportunity to discuss the progress, opportunities and challenges facing Kentucky as the state works to develop and implement eHealth. In addition, the summit will serve as a networking forum for individuals and organizations interested in health information technology and health information exchange and showcase the work of the Kentucky e-Health Network Board, e-Health innovators around the state, and national trends and efforts.

Session topics will include discussion on protecting privacy and security; best practices for implementing electronic health records; an update on federal activities and information on various regional and community health information exchange efforts. Speakers will include:

· Michael Heekin, former e-Health adviser to the Florida governor’s office

· Dr. Marc Overhage, Indiana Health Information Exchange

· Bob Steffel and Keith Hepp, HealthBridge

“Technology has transformed so much of the American economy, yet the health care industry continues to lag behind. We want to help make our hospitals, provider offices and pharmacies even more productive and efficient by helping establish an e-Health network in Kentucky,” said CHFS Secretary Mark D. Birdwhistell. “This is the right time to make the change.”
