Division of Health Care
Mary D. Curlin was appointed director of the Division of Health Care in May 2008. She has extensive experience with the state survey agency as a supervisor and surveyor.
Curlin held the position regional program manager in the division’s Western Enforcement Branch for 10 years. She is a certified surveyor and with more than 12 years experience in conducting surveys in various levels of care, including acute and psychiatric hospitals, end-stage dialysis facilities, rehabilitation agencies, special and rural clinics, ambulatory surgical centers, hospice, long-term care facilities, child caring facilities, residential treatment facilities and child placing facilities. Curlin also served as the quality assurance and complaint coordinator for six years during her tenure in the Western Enforcement Branch.
Curlin is a graduate of Western Kentucky University and holds a bachelor of science degree in community health. She is married and the mother of two adult children.

The Division of Health Care is responsible for inspecting, monitoring, licensing and certifying all health care facilities as defined by KRS 216.510(1). The division also is responsible for investigating complaints against health care facilities, facility plans review and developing regulations.
The division recommends various long-term care facilities for certification to receive Medicaid and Medicare funds through contracts with the Health Care Financing Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The regional offices of the Division of Health Care are responsible for conducting on-site visits of all health care facilities in the state to determine compliance with applicable licensing regulations and Medicare/Medicaid certification requirements. Complaints concerning these facilities are investigated by regional office staff.
