How to become a certified septic system installer in Kentucky
The installer exam is given through the local health department. Please contact your
local health department and speak to the environmentalist about taking the installer exam.
The installer exam is open book over the Kentucky onsite sewage disposal system regulations. The fee to take the exam is $25 and you must score at least 70 percent to pass and provide proof of liability insurance to the local health department.

The current certification year began April 1, 2024 and ended March 31, 2025. During this time, installers must have obtained six hours of approved maintenance training.
Installers who were newly certified during the first nine months of the certification year (April 1 through Dec. 31) also are required to attend two training courses or the equivalent by March 31, 2025. The certification of any installer who does not attend training will expire April 1, 2025.
Installers whose certification is currently expired for lack of maintenance training must obtain 12 CEUs to have certification reinstated through the certification year (by March 31, 2025). New proof of liability insurance also must be provided to the local health department.
Installers may not retake the initial installer test. For further information regarding certified installer training, please contact
Amber Ballinger or call (502)764-1585.
